When I was a little girl, I owned a large plastic locket – of much too large a size for anyone that little to actually be wearing around their necks. I think it was ordered from an Avon catalog, back in the days when we would round ourselves up and walk the neighborhood with my Mom as she made her Avon deliveries. And when I opened it, it would play this little melody to which my mother taught me the words and I would wander around, large locket heart opened, singing along:

You are my sunshine,

my only sunshine.

You make me happy,

when skies are gray.

You’ll never know, dear,

how much I love you.

Please don’t take my sunshine away.

When we learned I was pregnant with my first child, this was the song we’d hum to her in my womb and her daddy tried to pluck the strings of a guitar we wished we knew how to play in tune to the melody.

I know it’s a special song to many and creating it on canvas with touches of wire made my heart happy.
